In the horrific incident that took place at a cemetery in Adana, Şemsettin Erkuvan, who murdered mother Şenay Gerçek and her daughters Güldane and Gaye Gerçek with a handgun, was sentenced to 3 consecutive life sentences with aggravated conditions by the court. He was also sentenced to 1 year in prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
In the trial held at the Adana 10th High Criminal Court, the defendant Şemsettin Erkuvan attended via SEGBİS from prison. During the hearing, the prosecutor requested that the defendant be sentenced to 3 life sentences for the crime of "intentional killing" and 1 to 3 years in prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm.
SHOCKING DEFENSE FROM THE DEFENDANT
In his defense, defendant Erkuvan mentioned the death of his son two months prior to the incident, stating, "I do not believe my son Muzaffer committed suicide. When I saw them at the cemetery on the day of the incident, my son came to mind, and as a result of events that developed in an instant, we arrived at this situation. I trust in your justice."
The court decided to sentence the defendant to 3 aggravated life sentences for the crime of "intentional killing of women" and 1 year in prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm. The defendant's detention will continue.
BACKGROUND OF THE INCIDENT
On October 21, 2024, at the Buruk Cemetery, Güldane Gerçek was visiting the grave of Muzaffer Erkuvan, with whom she had previously lived and who had died by suicide, when she was attacked by Şemsettin Erkuvan. Erkuvan shot and killed Güldane Gerçek, whom he held responsible for his son's death, along with her mother and sister who were with her. Erkuvan, who was captured shortly after the incident, was arrested on October 26, 2024.
