He assaulted her while she was pregnant and stole her car; the court did not classify it as 'theft'
Burcu Kara, a 35-year-old teacher working in Adana, was subjected to both physical and psychological violence by her husband, B.K. Kara, who explained that she was severely beaten by her husband while pregnant, resulting in a broken foot and a risk of miscarriage, stated that while the divorce process was ongoing, her husband also stole her vehicle. However, because their legal status is still married, the incident was not treated as 'auto theft,' but merely as 'breach of trust.'

Kara, who has two children from her first marriage, stated that she began experiencing physical and psychological violence after her second marriage in February 2023. The teacher, who said the violence escalated after she became pregnant, stated, "My foot was broken, and there were bruises on my body. I was beaten repeatedly. During that process, I both faced the danger of losing my baby and collapsed psychologically," she said.
'HE KIDNAPPED MY BABY'
Stating that she filed for divorce on March 6, 2024, Kara expressed that her grievances have increased due to the prolongation of the process. She alleged that most recently, during a child visitation session where her husband arrived accompanied by a pedagogue and police, he stole her car keys from her bag and took her car. "Because we are married, the police could not process it as theft. If we had been divorced, the crime would be theft; now it is only seen as 'breach of trust.' This loophole in the law does not protect us," she said.
'HE FOUND MY NEW ADDRESS'
Kara also stated that the Ministry of National Education changed her place of duty for protection purposes, but her husband found her new address in a short time. The teacher, who also said he had previously kidnapped her 3-month-old baby, said, "He made me live through moments I will never forget for the rest of my life. This person is threatening both me and my children. I want justice to be served as soon as possible, my vehicle to be returned, and my divorce process to be completed," she said.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED
Teams from the Auto Theft Bureau of the Adana Police Department have launched an investigation to find the suspect, B.K., following Burcu Kara's report. Kara continues her legal struggle to show that she is not alone and to make her voice heard.
