Despite the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the CHP will head to the polls for the primary on Sunday, March 23. Party members will cast their votes at ballot boxes set up in CHP provincial and district headquarters.
The primary will be conducted in accordance with the party bylaws. Although İmamoğlu is the sole candidate, the CHP views this process as an "important organizational mobilization." The CHP Headquarters emphasizes that protecting the ballot boxes also means protecting democracy and the rule of law.
WHAT IS A SOLIDARITY BALLOT BOX?
It had previously been announced that anyone who was a party member by March 22 would be able to vote.
However, following İmamoğlu's detention, the CHP changed its roadmap. Those who are not members of the CHP will also be able to vote at a separate ballot box to be set up. These ballot boxes will be called “solidarity ballot boxes.”
The concept of the “solidarity ballot box,” which emerged after İmamoğlu's detention, has found broad support within the party. Party officials define the primary not only as a candidate selection process but also as an opportunity to display a collective stance against political pressure.
CHP PRIMARY VOTING HOURS
Voting will take place across the country on Sunday, March 23, 2025, between 08:00 and 17:00.
If there are voters waiting to cast their ballots at the polling station after the voting period has ended, the head of the ballot committee will allow these individuals to vote in turn after counting them and verifying their identities.
However, voters who arrive after the voting period has ended will not be able to vote.
WHO WILL VOTE WHERE?
