10 people killed in protests against tax hikes

Police intervened in demonstrations held in the capital, Nairobi, by protesters opposing the 2024 Finance Bill, which includes tax hikes. At least 10 people lost their lives after police opened fire on protesters who entered the parliament building.
A Red Cross volunteer, who requested anonymity, stated, "Dozens of people were injured. The death toll is likely to rise."
Hundreds of anti-tax protesters attacked the parliament building while lawmakers took refuge in underground tunnels. Demonstrators, carrying flags and banners, blocked main streets to traffic and entered the parliament garden, setting some vehicles on fire.
With the intervention of security forces, the demonstrators were removed from the parliament area, and the perimeter of the parliament building was brought under control.
PROTESTS IN KENYA
In Kenya, demonstrators, mostly consisting of young people, have been protesting the 2024 Finance Bill in various cities across the country since June 18.
Security forces had previously intervened in the protests, which were organized to express reactions to tax increases and concerns regarding economic policies, and many people had been detained.
Kenyan President William Ruto had called on the demonstrators for dialogue.
