2.3 billion dollar air defense system deal between Romania and Israel

In a statement released by the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, it was announced that short-range air defense systems worth 2.3 billion dollars will be purchased within the scope of a framework agreement signed with the Israeli defense company Rafael. Under the framework agreement Romania has made with the Rafael company, it is expected that 3 more contracts will be signed in the future and 6 air defense systems will be added to Romania's arsenal.
The statement also noted that the framework agreement will remain in effect for 7 years and that the first 2 short-range defense systems will be delivered to Romania within 3 years from the signing of the first of the future contracts. It was stated that the contracts will also cover training, ammunition, and logistics support related to the air defense systems.
The Rafael company is known as the manufacturer of Israel's Iron Dome air defense system and many other advanced defense systems. This procurement decision by Romania comes following pressure from US President Donald Trump and the decision made by NATO member countries to increase the share of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) allocated to the defense industry to 5 percent, in line with the decisions taken at the NATO Leaders Summit held in The Hague, Netherlands, at the end of last June.
