Following the civil war that has been ongoing in Syria for over 14 years, a significant economic step has been taken in the country. With a new decree issued by interim President Ahmed al-Shara, a 200 percent increase has been implemented in the salaries of both civilian and military public personnel, as well as retirees.
According to the decree, those receiving widow and orphan pensions will also benefit from this raise. However, in cases where an individual receives a salary from more than one institution, the raise will only be applied to the highest salary. Thus, salary increases have been regulated to be applicable from a single institution.
Last May, Syrian Minister of Finance Muhammad Berniye announced that a 29 million dollar aid fund provided by Qatar, which can be extended for another three months, would be used to pay the salaries of civilian public personnel working in health, education, and social services, as well as non-military retirees. It is stated that this aid fund will play an important role in financing the salary increases.
With the new regulation, the aim is to accelerate the economic recovery process in Syria and improve the living standards of public employees. However, the sustainability of the raises and their effects on the country's economy will be closely monitored in the coming period.
