2023 figures for gun violence in the US released
It has been announced that the number of mass shootings in the US in 2023 increased compared to the previous year, reaching 657.

According to data from the website Gun Violence Archive (GVA), at least 657 mass shootings occurred throughout last year, a figure that surpassed the number of attacks reported in 2022 (646).
The mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, in October, which resulted in 18 deaths and 13 injuries, was recorded as one of the deadliest shootings of recent years, including 2023.
GVA records indicate that a total of 42,988 people lost their lives and 36,366 people were injured in all gun-related incidents in 2023.
FBI CRITERIA ARE USED AS A BASIS
According to the GVA, which compiles gun violence incidents in the country daily from more than 7,000 sources, the total number of police officers killed and injured in all types of gun attacks in 2023 increased by 20 compared to the previous year, rising to 368.
The archive had reported that approximately 645 mass shootings occurred in 2022 and 690 in 2021.
The Gun Violence Archive uses the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) criteria for the definition of "mass shooting." Accordingly, shootings in which at least 4 people, excluding the attacker, are killed or injured in a single incident are considered "mass shootings." This definition does not include for-profit criminal activities, individual disputes or gang incidents, family murders, and similar violent events.
