Iraqi Minister of Health Saleh Al-Hasnawi stated that the fire, which started in a container containing waste materials belonging to the construction company renovating the hospital, did not burn the hospital building itself but filled it with smoke.

Minister Al-Hasnawi reported that 4 babies died due to smoke inhalation and stated that the final results of the investigation would be announced in 3 days. The Iraqi Red Crescent announced that 36 people were injured and that 150 children and more than 190 companions were evacuated from the hospital.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani held a phone call with Minister of Health Al-Hasnawi and Diwaniyah Governor Maytham Abdulilah Al-Shahad, demanding the dismissal of negligent officials and an investigation into the company performing the renovation work at the hospital. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
