Following the general elections held in Austria on September 29, 2024, coalition negotiations between political parties continued for approximately five months. After the initial talks failed to yield results, a consensus was finally reached during the second round of negotiations. A three-party coalition government was formed through an agreement between the center-right People's Party (ÖVP), the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), and the liberal New Austria Party (NEOS).

CHRISTIAN STOCKER TAKES OFFICE AFTER TAKING THE OATH

With the formation of the coalition government, ÖVP Chairman Christian Stocker took the oath and became the new Prime Minister of Austria. Stocker officially took office at a ceremony hosted by President Alexander Van der Bellen at the Presidential Palace. During the same ceremony, 14 ministers and seven state secretaries who will serve in the new cabinet also took their oaths.

HOW WAS THE NEW STRUCTURE AND DISTRIBUTION OF DUTIES OF THE GOVERNMENT SHAPED?

According to the coalition agreement, in the 21-member new cabinet, including the prime minister, the ÖVP received nine ministries, the SPÖ nine, and the NEOS three. Under the agreement, the ministries of interior and defense were given to the ÖVP, the ministries of finance and justice to the SPÖ, and the ministry of foreign affairs to the NEOS. One of the new government's primary goals has been identified as economic reform and addressing the budget deficit.

PRESIDENT VAN DER BELLEN EMPHASIZES COOPERATION

Speaking at the ceremony, President Alexander Van der Bellen stated that the cooperation achieved after the long negotiations was a positive development for the country. Emphasizing that the public now wants to see concrete steps rather than just words, Van der Bellen noted that the new government faces great responsibilities. Furthermore, reminding that Europe must maintain its economic strength, he expressed that Austria needs a rational defense policy regarding peace and security issues.

HOW DID THE DIFFICULT PROCESS OF COALITION NEGOTIATIONS UNFOLD?

Following the elections, the initial coalition talks conducted between the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS had ended in failure. Consequently, the center-right ÖVP began negotiations with the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ). However, no results were achieved from these talks, which lasted over a month. Following this, the three parties came together again and reached an agreement to form a new coalition. Last week, the government program was presented to Van der Bellen, and the final decision was made.

WHAT IS THE NEW GOVERNMENT'S PRIORITY AGENDA?

One of the most important goals of the new government will be to address the budget deficit, which is one of the country's biggest economic problems. ÖVP leader Stocker announced that the government aims to reduce additional taxes on employees' incomes. It was stated that tax cuts would be implemented to the extent permitted by the budget, in line with the SPÖ's proposals on this matter. In addition to economic reforms, social policies and relations with the European Union are among the main issues the new government will focus on.
