According to a statement from the Seismic Station Center of the Kazakhstan Ministry of Emergency Situations, the 6.1 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter 31 kilometers south of Almaty, occurred at 11:22 local time.

A warning signal was issued in Almaty at the moment of the tremor.

In a statement from the Almaty Department of Emergency Situations, residents who took to the streets were warned not to panic.

The statement reported that there were no casualties and that efforts to collect information regarding damage are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the earthquake was also felt in Bishkek, the capital of neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
