A 6.9 magnitude earthquake has occurred in Japan. According to a statement from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the tremor, which had its epicenter off the coast of the country's Iwate Prefecture, was recorded at a depth of 50 kilometers at 07:30 local time.
The earthquake, which was felt in the Aomori, Miyagi, and Hokkaido prefectures as well as the capital Tokyo and its surrounding areas, caused brief panic.
It was reported that there is no risk of a tsunami following the tremor, but that minor changes in sea level could occur.
