7.1 magnitude earthquake hits Pacific island of Tonga
A powerful earthquake has been recorded in the Haapai island group of the Kingdom of Tonga. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the magnitude of the tremor, which had its epicenter near Pangaia, at 7.1.

Following the earthquake, which occurred 10 kilometers below the surface, a tsunami warning was issued for the region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center released an alert for the coastline within 300 kilometers of the earthquake's epicenter.
Island residents reported that alarm sirens sounded immediately after the tremor. Authorities advised those living in coastal areas to move to higher ground.
Tonga's volcanic island chains are located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The region is situated in a belt of intense seismic activity. No official statement has yet been made regarding the extent of damage or loss of life from the latest earthquake. Local authorities have initiated inspections in coastal areas.
