Construction is rapidly nearing completion on the new road bridge that will directly connect North Korea and Russia. The latest situation reflected in satellite imagery reveals that the Pyongyang administration has almost completely finished the approach roads, customs facility, and checkpoint leading to the bridge, while construction activities and ground preparations continue on the Russian side. Although feverish preparations are underway in Russia's customs area, it is stated that the crossing is not yet ready to be opened to commercial vehicles.
This bridge rising over the Tumen River is also of great importance in terms of reviving the connections that existed between the two countries many years ago during the Soviet era via rail transport. There was a significant decrease in freight transport after 1991, but with the military and political relations that have developed in recent years, traffic on the border line has shown an increase again.
Foreign Policy Research Institute researcher John Ford emphasizes that the primary purpose of the new bridge is to alleviate the logistical difficulties experienced on the existing railway. According to Ford, the inadequacy of container infrastructure in North Korea necessitates the manual transfer of cargo, which slows down rail shipments. Ford states, "The new road connection aims to resolve the bottleneck on the railway."
When construction is finished, it is estimated that truck crossings will accelerate and a significant portion of shipments could be carried out by road. However, the primary purpose for which the line will be used has not yet been clarified. Some analysts evaluate that the new bridge could primarily be used for Russia's exports, while others suggest it could pave the way for the shipment of various products, primarily ammunition, from North Korea.
Considering that both countries have further strengthened their mutual relations in the recent period, this new land connection over the Tumen River seems set to play a critical role in the future at both a commercial and strategic level. Experts point out that with the completion of the bridge, security, trade, and political balances in the region could also be reshaped.
