Access to messaging app Viber blocked in Russia

Access to the messaging app Viber has been blocked in Russia on the grounds that it failed to comply with legislation regarding the fight against terrorism, extremism, and drugs.

In a written statement, the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media stated that Viber did not comply with legislation regarding terrorism and extremism.

The statement included the following: "Access to the Viber application has been restricted due to violations of the requirements of legislation regarding the fight against terrorism, extremism, and drugs in Russia."

Previously, access bans had been imposed in Russia on platforms such as Facebook, X, and Instagram, and most recently on YouTube on August 1.

The messaging app Viber is among the popular messaging applications in Russia, following WhatsApp and Telegram.
