In a statement from the Goma Volcano Observatory (OVG) in Congo, it was reported that activity has been observed since November 4 at the Nyiragongo Volcano, which last erupted in May 2021.

CALL FOR CALM

The statement, which noted that the activity is not at a critical level, issued a call for calm to the public.

Goma is home to the active Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo volcanoes.

When the Nyiragongo Volcano erupted on May 22, 2021, 32 people lost their lives. In the disaster, lava reached into the city, and thousands of people were left homeless.

When the volcano erupted in 2002, 250 people died and 120 thousand people were left homeless.

In recent days, activity has also been observed in regions with volcanoes in Iceland and Italy.
