Alarming global temperature rise announcement from climate organization

The international climate science research organization Berkeley Earth has confirmed that 2023 was the hottest year on record and announced that the global temperature increase has exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average.

According to the Annual Temperature Report published by Berkeley Earth, global average temperatures last year surpassed the values of 2016, the previous record holder. Thus, 2023 became the hottest year on record.

THE LIMIT HAS BEEN EXCEEDED FOR THE FIRST TIME

The global temperature increase in 2023 rose 1.54 degrees above the pre-industrial average of 1850-1900, and the 1.5-degree limit targeted in the Paris Agreement to curb temperature rise was exceeded for the first time.

During a 7-month period of the year, the average temperature increase reached at least 1.5 degrees compared to the 1850-1900 average. The largest temperature anomaly was recorded in September 2023, when values rose 1.84 degrees above the pre-industrial average.

RECORD TEMPERATURES

Last year, extreme temperatures were observed particularly in Central and South America, parts of Asia, and the North Atlantic, while ice levels in Antarctica decreased to record lows throughout the winter.

Annual average temperatures set new records in China, Nigeria, South Korea, Brazil, and Kazakhstan; no region in the world experienced records for low temperature values.

When temperature values are examined on a regional basis, 2.3 billion people, representing 29 percent of the world's population, experienced the hottest year in their respective regions.

THE LAST 9 YEARS HAVE BEEN THE HOTTEST

While the last 9 years have been the hottest on record globally, the extraordinary temperature values in 2023 were caused by long-term warming resulting from human-induced greenhouse gas emissions and natural variation.

Additionally, the strong El Nino effect in the eastern Equatorial Pacific and the once-in-a-century sea surface temperature anomalies in the North Atlantic were factors that led to the temperature rise, especially in the second half of the year.

2024 WILL BE HOTTER

Based on current conditions, global average temperatures are projected to be higher this year.

In general, since the second year following the emergence of El Nino is warmer, this year is expected to be very similar to or slightly warmer than 2023. On the other hand, it is estimated that the emergence of the La Nina effect in late 2024 could contribute somewhat to a decrease in temperatures.

Berkeley Earth Lead Scientist Robert Rohde, in his assessment of the findings in the report, stated, "2023 showed a major discrepancy according to temperature models.

We will see in the future whether last year's temperatures were an unusual outlier or an indicator of unexpected changes.

With greenhouse gas emissions continuing at record levels, there is a high probability that global temperature rise will regularly exceed 1.5 degrees in the near future."
