According to an NBC News report, the person who created the fake Biden audio recording using artificial intelligence technology turned out to be Paul Carpenter, who makes a living performing magic shows in the state of Louisiana.
Carpenter stated that Steve Kramer, who works for another candidate in the Democratic Party, Dean Phillips, asked him for the audio recording in question and that he had no knowledge of where it would be used.
Detailing the incident, Carpenter stated that he created the fake audio recording, which is currently under investigation, using a program called Eleven Labs, saying, "I created the voice used in the robocall, but I did not distribute it. It was a situation where someone offered to pay me to do something, and I did it. There was no malicious intent. I didn't know how it would be distributed."
THE FAKE VOICE WAS CREATED IN LESS THAN 20 MINUTES
Stating that it is "very easy" to mislead people with artificial intelligence, Carpenter said, "It took less than 20 minutes to create the fake voice and it only cost 1 dollar."
Carpenter also shared Venmo mobile payment records showing that he received only 150 dollars from Kramer for this job.
Stating that he met Kramer through a mutual acquaintance, Carpenter said that he had done some work for him in the fields of website and social media management, and that he closely follows developments in the field of artificial intelligence.
BIDEN'S VOICE WAS IMITATED
In a statement from the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, it was noted that an investigation had been launched into the artificial intelligence-generated fake audio recording sent to voters' phones hours before the primary elections held in the state on January 23, in which Biden's voice was imitated.
It was reported that the fake audio recording was an "illegal attempt" to "discourage Democratic voters from casting their ballots" in the presidential primary.
The audio recording, which was shared as if it belonged to US President Biden, included the statement, "Voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to re-elect Donald Trump. Your vote will make a difference in November, not this Tuesday."
