President Lula da Silva stated that if US President Donald Trump imposes additional customs duties on Brazilian products, they will impose reciprocal taxes.

Lula da Silva evaluated Trump's statements regarding the imposition of high customs duties on Brazilian products during a press conference held in the capital, Brasilia.

President Lula da Silva, arguing that Trump would harm global trade, stated the following:

''It is very simple. If he imposes taxes on Brazilian products, Brazil will respond by imposing taxes on products imported from the US.''

Stating that he wants Brazil's bilateral relations with the US to be based on mutual respect, Lula da Silva declared his intention to improve ties with the US, which is Brazil's second-largest trading partner after China.

'DEMOCRACY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR HUMANITY RIGHT NOW'

Touching upon Trump's remarks regarding Greenland and the Panama Canal, Lula da Silva emphasized that the US President must respect the sovereignty of other countries.

Claiming that the US could harm democracy, Silva continued his words as follows:

''I want to respect the US, and Trump should respect Brazil. That is all. For me, democracy is the most important thing for humanity right now. Either we will keep democracy functioning, or we will have states more authoritarian than Hitler and fascism.''

In a statement on January 28, Trump had noted that he would impose high tariffs on those who harm America, stating that countries such as China, India, and Brazil were among them.
