Law enforcement officials stated in a press briefing that the attacker, who wounded himself, died a short time later in the incident at Perry High School, and that two students and a school administrator were also injured.

Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante shared the information that there were few students and teachers in the school because the attack took place before class hours.

While Infante stated that the police intervened in the incident within 7 minutes, officials at the Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines announced that the injured were receiving treatment.

The attack took place close to the Republican Party's primary elections in the state on January 15 for the 2024 presidential race and in a location not far from where the party caucuses are held.
