Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and members of the UN Security Council condemning Israel's attack on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran. In the letter, a copy of which was also sent to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi, Arakchi warned that attacks on his country's nuclear facilities could have serious humanitarian and environmental consequences.
The Iranian Foreign Minister stated that the US and Israel are targeting peaceful nuclear facilities in Iran that are under IAEA supervision. He emphasized that the attacks, particularly those occurring in the vicinity of the active Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, pose a "serious risk of radiological leakage." Stating that these attacks are illegal, Arakchi noted that this situation leaves the entire region facing the danger of radioactive contamination and that the international community should not remain indifferent to these developments.
Arakchi criticized the UN Security Council and the IAEA for failing to take effective steps against these attacks, stating that this situation emboldens the parties carrying out the attacks. Arakchi reiterated that attacks occurring near an active nuclear facility are "unacceptable" and pose a serious risk of radiological spread.
Targeted regions highlighted
The letter shared information that various attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran have taken place in recent weeks. According to this, the Natanz nuclear facility was targeted twice on March 1, while a structure 350 meters from the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant was hit on March 17.
