According to the statement from the Secret Service, the armed individual, believed to have come from Indiana, was spotted around midnight about one block away from the White House. Authorities explained that they had been tracking the individual and their vehicle after local police reported that the person 'was showing suicidal tendencies.'
Emphasizing that the incident occurred after the individual drew a weapon, Secret Service officials stated the following:
'When officers approached, the individual drew the weapon they were holding, and an armed confrontation began. Our personnel were forced to open fire.'
According to NBC News, it was learned that U.S. President Donald Trump was in Florida at the time of the incident. Authorities reported that there was no threat to the security of the White House and that the confrontation took place one block away, not immediately adjacent to the presidential residence.
