The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has claimed that an assassination attempt was made against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has taken refuge in Russia.
The statement alleged that the ousted Syrian leader was targeted in a poisoning attempt. The report published by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted that Assad was discharged from a hospital in the Russian capital, Moscow, on Monday and that his condition is stable.
The statement also pointed out that the assassination attempt might have been carried out to embarrass the Russian government and implicate it in the assassination plot.
Sources stated that very strict restrictions were placed on visitors during the time Assad remained in the hospital. According to the allegations, only his brother Maher al-Assad and the former Secretary-General of the Syrian Presidency, Mansour Azzam, were permitted to visit Assad. Russian authorities have not yet made a statement regarding the matter.
IN ABSENTIA ARREST WARRANT HAD BEEN ISSUED
Last week, Syria issued an arrest warrant in absentia for Assad, who has been seeking refuge in Russia since December 2024.
Judge Tawfiq al-Ali of the 7th Investigation Court of Syria announced that the charges against Assad include intentional homicide, torture resulting in death, and deprivation of liberty.
Judge Al-Ali stated, "We issued the arrest warrant following a lawsuit filed by the relatives of those who lost their lives in Daraa on November 23, 2011. The case is of a nature that can be disseminated internationally via Interpol and can also be pursued externally. The decision paves the way for the prosecution of those responsible for systematic violations. The legal process will continue until all perpetrators of the crimes committed by the regime are reached."

The reaction of the public, who initially took to the streets with demands for reform, quickly turned into a demand for the overthrow of the regime. The aforementioned developments in Daraa went down in history as the beginning of the civil war and humanitarian crisis in Syria that lasted for years.
