The Australian Senate has approved a bill banning social media access for children under the age of 16.
According to a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the Australian Senate passed the bill banning social media access for children under 16 with 34 votes to 19 during its final session of the year.
The bill, which is expected to be approved again by the House of Representatives tomorrow due to minor amendments made before its passage in the Senate, will become law after receiving symbolic assent from the Governor-General of Australia.
WILL COME INTO EFFECT AFTER A 12-MONTH PERIOD
The bill, which was put to a vote in the Australian House of Representatives yesterday, had been approved by 102 votes to 13.
The bill, which is the first of its kind in the world, will come into effect after a 12-month period granted to social media companies to make the necessary arrangements.
Social media platforms that fail to comply with the law will face penalties.
