Belgian Prime Minister De Croo announces he will resign

The European Parliament (EP) elections have prompted European governments to take action.

Following Macron's decision to dissolve the national assembly and call for early elections, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo also announced that he would resign tomorrow.

In Belgium, the public voted today for members of the European Parliament (EP) as well as the federal parliament and regional parliaments.

According to unofficial results, the prediction that the far-right Flemish party VB would come in first did not materialize, but the election results have created a crisis in the government. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo's party, the Flemish liberal Open Vld, recorded a decline of 2.6 percent and finished 9th with 5.7 percent of the vote. Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced that he would resign tomorrow.

Stating that he accepts that his party lost the elections, De Croo said, "This evening is a very emotional evening. I must accept that we have lost. I will submit my resignation tomorrow.''
According to the general election results, while the vote share of left-wing parties in the country is decreasing, it is observed that right-wing and far-right parties are leading in the Flemish wing. Prime Minister De Croo's party is not expected to take part in the federal government or the governments to be formed in the Flemish region.

When De Croo went to the polls for the European Parliament elections, he had stated, "Every election is important and in every election people will say that this is the most important election ever. But I think we are truly at a turning point in Europe and in all countries, including Belgium.”
