According to the bill, ByteDance has between 6 months and 1 year to divest from TikTok. The bill also states that if US President Joe Biden determines that progress has been made regarding the sale, the sale period can be extended by another 90 days.
The bill, which passed the House of Representatives, will be submitted for Biden's approval following a vote in the Senate.
BIDEN HAD SAID 'I WILL SIGN IT'
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said in a statement after the vote, "This bill protects Americans and especially American children from the harmful influence of Chinese propaganda on the TikTok app. This app is a spy balloon on Americans' phones."
In a statement made by TikTok earlier this week, it was stated, "It is unfortunate that the House is using the cover of important foreign and humanitarian assistance to once again jam through a ban bill that would trample the free speech rights of 170 million Americans, devastate 7 million businesses, and shutter a platform that contributes 24 billion dollars annually to the US economy."
US President Biden had said in a statement last month, "If they pass the bill, I will sign it."
