US President Joe Biden issued a statement following the announcement by Israeli officials that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has died.
Biden said, "This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world. I will be speaking with Prime Minister Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders soon to congratulate them, to discuss the pathways to bringing the hostages home to their families, and to ending this war once and for all, which has caused so much devastation to innocent people."
Expressing his hope that an opportunity has been seized for the next steps to be taken for Gaza, Biden said, "There is now the opportunity for a 'day after' in Gaza without Hamas in power, and for a political solution that provides a better future for both Israelis and Palestinians. There is still much work to do."
