'Birth control' to be implemented for pigeons
The city of Krakow in southern Poland has launched a pilot birth control program to curb the increase in the pigeon population and improve their overall condition.

Birth control will be implemented for pigeons in the Polish tourist city of Krakow, famous for its pigeons. The Krakow Municipality, in collaboration with the Dzikusy Salamandry Foundation and various scientific and research circles, has prepared a pilot birth control program for the pigeons.
Sabina Janeczko, the Krakow Municipality spokesperson responsible for animals, stated in her announcement that the goal of the program is to improve the general condition of the pigeons and reduce the difficulties arising from diseases and access to food caused by their overpopulation.
Stating that special feeders will be placed in certain spots in the city where pigeons congregate, Janeczko noted that the birds will not disappear the very next day as a result of the program. "The feeders will dose the corn inside with birth control medication every day, or rather, the corn kernels will be coated with the medication in this way," Janeczko said, adding that the pilot program is a long-term but safe process.
Przemyslaw Baran, a veterinarian at the Dzikusy Salamandry Foundation, stated that dozens of injured or neglected pigeons are brought to their clinic every day, which is why they decided to solve the problem systematically.
