Black smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney

Black smoke has risen from the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. A new pope was not elected in the first day of voting.

The first round of voting by cardinals, who have gathered in the world-famous historic Sistine Chapel to elect the new pope of the Catholic Church, has ended without a result.

When no result emerged from the vote by the cardinals—the highest-ranking clergy in the Christian hierarchy after the Pope—black smoke rose from the chapel's chimney.

If a positive result had been reached in the voting, white smoke would have risen from the chimney.
