A tense atmosphere has emerged in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, as a series of explosions were heard and thick smoke began rising from different parts of the city.
Local sources reported at least seven separate explosions across the city, while information was shared that power had been cut in the southern regions.
Immediately following the events, US President Donald Trump announced on his social media account that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been captured.
The Trump administration accuses Maduro of drug trafficking and collaborating with gangs designated as terrorist organizations. Maduro denies these accusations. On Christmas Eve, when asked what his goal was, Trump did not give a clear answer, but stated that if Maduro "plays tough, it will be the last time."
