South Korean scientists, experimenting with a new approach to cancer treatment, have worked on a method that enables cells to return to a healthy state. In the study, a method was tested to reverse the development process of cancerous cells. The researchers succeeded in revealing the formation process of cancerous cells in detail.
The discovery by the South Korean scientists revealed the genetic changes occurring at the molecular level. The researchers emphasized that the study could make it possible to reverse the development process of cancerous cells through treatments applied at the molecular level.
Traditional cancer treatments have focused on removing cancer cells through surgery or destroying them with radiation and chemotherapy. These methods damage not only the cancerous cells but all cells in the body.
This situation causes debilitating side effects in patients receiving treatment. Traditional treatments carry the risk of leading patients to develop further illnesses, including new cancers. On the other hand, the discovery made by scientists regarding the stages of cancer formation makes it possible to develop treatment methods that restore cells to a healthy state, unlike traditional treatment methods.
Kwang-Hyun Cho, a professor of biology at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and co-author of the study, emphasized that cancer development is not a sudden process and stated the following:
'This study has revealed in detail, at the genetic network level, what changes occur within cells behind the cancer development process, which has been considered a mystery until now. This is the first study to show that an important clue that could change the fate (development process) of (the disease) is hidden in this very moment when the change occurs.'
ARE NEW TREATMENT METHODS POSSIBLE?
Dr. Tiffany Troso-Sandoval stated that the study focuses on cancerous cells that have begun to lose their healthy structure. According to the scientist, this research could play a 'key role' in developing new approaches to replace traditional treatment methods. Sandoval described the research as 'groundbreaking'.
Speaking to the DailyMail, Sandoval also pointed out that the new findings could show a way to prevent tumor formation in people with a family history of cancer or those regularly exposed to carcinogens such as cigarette smoke. According to Sandoval, the research opens the door to treatment methods that will prevent the formation of the disease.
Highlighting that the study makes it possible to develop new methods to replace those that harm the body, such as radiation and chemotherapy, Sandoval reported the following:
'The study brings a new approach to cancer treatment by restructuring cancer cells instead of destroying them. The findings could enable the development of less toxic treatments instead of methods like chemotherapy.'
