Bridge collapses in Germany
A section of the Carola Bridge over the Elbe River in Dresden, Germany, has collapsed. A disaster was narrowly avoided as the last tram had crossed the bridge just 10 minutes before the collapse.

A partial collapse occurred overnight on the Carola Bridge, which spans the Elbe River in the German city of Dresden.
Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the area to assess the damage. In a statement, the Dresden Fire Department reported that a section of the bridge approximately 100 meters long, where the tram tracks are located, had collapsed, and that there were no casualties or injuries. It was learned that the last tram had passed over the bridge 10 minutes before the collapse.
The bridge, which connects Dresden's historic district from the East Germany era to other parts of the city, and the surrounding roads were closed to traffic following the collapse.
While there are major disruptions to city traffic, the pipes providing the city's heating system were also damaged following the collapse. Authorities have warned that further sections of the bridge could collapse.
While the cause of the bridge's collapse is not yet known, it is suggested that it may have been exposed to corrosion.
