In a statement, the police announced that Mandelson was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, stating, "Police officers have detained a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office."
"Mandelson, who was detained at an address in Camden on Monday, February 23, was taken to a London police station for questioning. This detention follows the execution of search warrants at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas," the statement added.
He had resigned from the Labour Party and the House of Lords
It was observed that the correspondence between Mandelson and Epstein took place while Mandelson was serving as Secretary of State for Business and Trade in Gordon Brown's government in 2009. Mandelson was appointed as the UK Ambassador to the US in 2024 but was removed from his post less than a year later after some of his correspondence with Epstein came to light. Mandelson, seen as one of the primary architects of the Labour Party's election successes in 1997, 2001, and 2005, had resigned from his Labour Party membership and subsequently from the House of Lords after new correspondence with Epstein was revealed.

It emerged that in 2009, Mandelson told Epstein that the head of JP Morgan bank should "gently threaten" the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer over tax plans targeting banker bonuses, that he gave Epstein advance notice of a 500 billion euro bailout package prepared by the EU during the eurozone debt crisis, that Epstein sent a total of 75 thousand dollars to Mandelson in 2003 and 2004, with each payment being 25 thousand dollars, and that Epstein sent 10 thousand pounds to Mandelson's partner, Reinaldo Avila da Silva.
