Buses in Pakistan draw attention with their colors

Pakistan's urban public transportation is carried out by buses that draw attention with their distinct colors and decorations.

Despite being old, the buses, which attract attention with their decorations and the various paintings drawn on them, are preferred by the public.

The buses, which are preferred because they offer more affordable service compared to air-conditioned public transport vehicles, add color to the country's roads. The buses, which have no doors and assistants hanging off the side, also have seating areas on their roofs.

Stating that he has been a driver for a long time, Tahir Zaib said the following:

"We decorate the buses because we like our vehicles this way. Passengers prefer this bus because the fare is affordable. Since Pakistanis have low incomes, our bus is more affordable. That is why they prefer our buses. Some people also prefer our bus because they are uncomfortable with air conditioning."

Zaib said that the colorful buses are especially full during rush hours for commuting to and from work.

Explaining that there is always an assistant on every bus, Zaib noted the following:

"Assistants wait at the door and let passengers in. When the bus is crowded, passengers do not fit inside. Sometimes passengers hang on by holding onto the door. Since this is more dangerous, we want them to climb onto the roof of the bus. When it is crowded, we seat the passengers on the top part. Normally, sitting here is forbidden and the police issue fines. We take that risk when it is crowded."
