China has accelerated its diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the rising tensions between India and Pakistan. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate phone calls with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, calling on both sides to "maintain the ceasefire."
PAKISTAN: WE ARE READY FOR CEASEFIRE BUT REMAIN VIGILANT
According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang expressed during his meeting with Ishaq Dar that China supports the ceasefire reached between India and Pakistan. Wang stated that maintaining the ceasefire would be in the interest of both countries and regional stability.
Pakistani Minister Dar said his country is ready to remain committed to the ceasefire. However, he emphasized that they would remain vigilant against any potential violation of sovereignty from India. Dar stated that Pakistan reserves the right to respond to attacks on its territorial integrity.
INDIA: WAR IS NOT OUR CHOICE
In his meeting with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Wang Yi stated that China condemns the terrorist attack that took place in the Pahalgam region on April 22, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives. Wang said that China is against all forms of terrorism but that restraint and dialogue gain importance during such times.
Indian official Doval stated that his country was forced to take measures following this attack. However, emphasizing that war is not India's preference, Doval stated that both countries should remain committed to the ceasefire and that they believe regional peace can be restored.
PAHALGAM ATTACK AND ESCALATING TENSION
On April 22, 26 people lost their lives in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, located in India's Jammu and Kashmir region. Following this incident, India launched missile strikes on May 6 into Pakistani territory and Azad Kashmir, which is under Pakistani control.
These attacks led to serious military tension between the two countries, and the risk of conflict alarmed the international community. A ceasefire was declared between the two sides on May 10 through US mediation. However, despite the ceasefire, the parties maintain their mutual distrust.
During the talks, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that the peace and stability achieved in Asia after long struggles were not easily won. He stated that China's expectation is for India and Pakistan to avoid provocations and resolve their disputes through dialogue and consultation.
