Change of prime minister on the agenda in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that the departure of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko is on the agenda. Stating that the country's political strategy needs to be updated, Zelenskyy announced that a process of cabinet changes will begin.

In Ukraine, where martial law remains in effect due to the war and elections cannot be held, the approval of the Ukrainian Parliament is required for the departure of Svyrydenko, who has been serving as prime minister for approximately one year.

In a statement on his social media account, Zelenskyy said, "Personnel changes will begin to ensure the implementation of the updated political strategy. We discussed these details with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. We agreed that these changes require a renewal of the Cabinet of Ministers. I thank Yulia for her clear, stable, and effective work as prime minister and for the productive service she has provided to the Ukrainian team for many years."

Zelenskyy also stated that he had offered Svyrydenko a new position, saying, "I have offered her a new and important role in which she will manage our relations with one of our key partners. I hope that together with the members of the Ukrainian Parliament, we will carry out the necessary changes in the government."

SVYRYDENKO: I AM READY FOR ANY TASK

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko also confirmed in a statement that she would be stepping down. Svyrydenko said, "I am proud to have had the honor of leading the government during one of the most challenging periods in Ukraine's modern history."

Stating that they have discussed the next steps with Zelenskyy, Svyrydenko said, "I am ready for any task aimed at serving Ukraine, strengthening our country's position, defending our national interests, and bringing a just peace even closer."

Svyrydenko took office in July 2025, replacing former Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. During the tenure of Svyrydenko, who previously served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, the government had prioritized the development of the domestic defense industry, the strengthening of the economy, and the maintenance of state resilience under wartime conditions.

According to Ukrainian law, the resignation of the prime minister means the resignation of the entire Cabinet of Ministers. The current cabinet is expected to continue its duties as a caretaker government until a new government is approved.
