China calls for dialogue between US and Iran: Do not let tension in the Middle East grow

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning made assessments regarding the US military activity in the Middle East and allegations of a possible attack on Iran during a press conference held in Beijing.

Spokesperson Mao expressed hope that all parties would act with common sense and that disputes would be resolved through dialogue. In her statement, she included the remark, "The escalation of tension in the Middle East serves the interests of no party."

The recent acceleration of the US military buildup in the region has brought up allegations of the possibility of a military intervention against Iran in the near future. US President Donald Trump, when asked by a journalist at the White House on February 20, "Are you considering a limited military strike against Iran?", fueled speculation by responding, "I think I can say that I am considering it."

From the Iranian side, harsh statements have been made regarding a possible military operation. Ebrahim Azizi, Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, noted that they would respond to any attack against the country and that this would lead to "regrettable" consequences. In their recent statements, Iranian officials warn, "Any attack, even if limited, would cause a regional war and would not go unanswered."

Nuclear negotiations, which were interrupted following attacks by Israel and the US on Iran in June 2025, had resumed in Oman on February 6. Subsequently, the parties held a second round of talks in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 18. The US and Iranian delegations are expected to sit at the table once again in Geneva on February 26.

China's call is considered an important message to all actors in the region to de-escalate tensions and seek solutions through dialogue.
