China's mediation move

The recent escalation of regional tensions, driven by Iran's moves targeting countries hosting US bases in response to attacks by the US and Israel, is causing concern in the international community. In this environment, China has taken action to launch a new mediation initiative aimed at promoting peace in the Middle East.

BEIJING DIPLOMACY IN ACTION

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated during phone calls with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and United Arab Emirates (UAE) Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan that they are concerned about the crisis in the region. During the talks, Wang said that China does not want the conflict to spread and is making preparations to send a special envoy to the Middle East for this purpose.

Wang Yi emphasized that they condemn all forms of indiscriminate use of force and are particularly opposed to attacks targeting civilians or non-military targets. The Chinese minister expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia's cautious stance and commitment to diplomacy in the face of the crisis. "We believe that reconciliation between countries in the region is not easily achieved. We must protect and advance this valuable development," he said.

SUPPORT FOR GULF COUNTRIES' PEACE EFFORTS

In China's meeting with the UAE Foreign Minister, it was also underlined that energy infrastructure and civilian life must be protected. Wang delivered the message, "Protecting civilians is a red line for us. The security of the economy, transportation, and energy lines must be kept away from attacks on non-military targets."

Furthermore, Wang praised the efforts made by the UAE to ensure regional peace prior to the conflict. While highlighting the importance of the dialogue that came to the fore at the recently held Gulf Cooperation Council meeting, it was stated that China favors a diplomatic solution, supports all efforts in this direction, and will send its Special Envoy for the Middle East for mediation.

CHINA'S HISTORY OF MEDIATION IN THE REGION

China previously played an active role in the normalization of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, with the parties reviving their diplomatic ties following talks held in Beijing. During this process, the two countries reopened their embassies and planned high-level visits. However, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi lost his life in a helicopter crash before his planned visit to Saudi Arabia.

Tensions in the region rose further following the military operation launched by Israel and the US against Tehran on February 28. In response, Iran engaged in attacks targeting countries such as Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain, where US bases are located. It was reported that high-level figures from Iran lost their lives in the clashes, and according to the Iranian Ministry of Health, a total of 926 people have lost their lives in the US-Israel attacks.

The Chinese administration, arguing that it is not possible to reach a solution through military methods, called on all parties to return to dialogue and sit at the negotiating table as soon as possible.
