The Colombian government has announced that it will purchase land worth 4.25 billion dollars to be distributed to farmers who were forced to abandon their lands by armed groups.
According to a report by Euronews; National Land Agency President Gerardo Vega stated, “We will give 10 hectares per family, and approximately 150 thousand families will benefit.” Vega noted that approximately 100 thousand hectares have already been distributed and that the purchasing process will be accelerated.
With this step, the leftist government aims to increase agricultural production and support peace efforts with FARC and other guerrilla organizations.
Gustavo Petro, a former guerrilla who won the elections in Colombia last year, became the country's first leftist leader and had accelerated negotiations with guerrilla groups.
