Command change in the Ukrainian army

In his daily video message evaluating the latest developments in the Russia-Ukraine War, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced significant changes in the army's leadership. Following a meeting with the top brass of the Ukrainian Army, Zelenskyy announced that Chief of the General Staff Oleksandr Syrskyi would be removed from his post and replaced by Joint Forces Commander Brigadier General Mykhailo Drapatiy.

Zelenskiy stated that Oleksandr Syrskyi had played critical roles in the country's defense and counter-offensive operations, saying, "Syrskyi made significant contributions to the defense of Kyiv at the beginning of the war, the counter-offensives in Kharkiv, and the attacks on Russia's Kursk region. I thank him." Adding that the decision would be officially announced the following day, Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of renewal in military leadership.

It was known that there had been disagreements at the highest levels of the army recently. On July 16, President Zelenskyy shared with the public that there were differences of opinion between Defense Minister Fedorov, Chief of the General Staff Syrskyi, and their teams. That same evening, Yevgeni Khmara, the Acting Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, was appointed as acting Minister of Defense, signaling the beginning of a new era within the government.

Following Fedorov's removal from office, protests in support of the Minister were held in cities such as Kyiv, as well as Odesa and Lviv. This activity in the military administration has moved to the top of the political and social agenda in Ukraine during this critical stage of the war.

Oleksandr Syrskyi was appointed Chief of the General Staff about a year and a half ago, in February 2024. His successor, Drapatiy, is known particularly for his experience as Commander of the Joint Forces. How the new leadership will affect the course of the Ukrainian army is being followed with curiosity.
