Congratulatory messages from European leaders to Magyar, winner of the election in Hungary: Democracy and the rule of law

Assessing that Hungary has "chosen Europe," von der Leyen stated, "A country is reclaiming its European path. The Union is becoming even stronger."

European Council President Antonio Costa also commented, "The record turnout shows the democratic spirit of the Hungarian people."

Costa emphasized that he looks forward to working closely with Magyar to make Europe stronger and more prosperous.

European Parliament (EP) President Roberta Metsola also congratulated Magyar, noting that he is a member of the EP, and shared the message, "Hungary's place is in the heart of Europe."

Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul congratulated Peter Magyar, leader of the Respect and Freedom Party (Tisza).

In a post on the X social media platform, Merz stated, "The people of Hungary have voted. The voters have decided in favor of a political transformation. I congratulate Peter Magyar. I hope the country will now re-evaluate the great opportunities in and with Europe."

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also emphasized in his post that Hungary had made its decision in the election and congratulated Peter Magyar.

Noting that he looks forward to working together for a strong, secure, and united Europe with Hungary, Wadephul added, "The impressive turnout shows how important hard-won democracy is for the people."

Ireland

Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin congratulated Magyar on social media, saying, "I congratulate Peter Magyar and Tisza on their victory in the parliamentary elections in Hungary. I look forward to working with Prime Minister-elect Magyar to develop our bilateral relations."

EU Minister Thomas Byrne stated in his post, emphasizing that Magyar and Tisza had achieved a great victory, "As EU Minister, I look forward to working with the incoming Hungarian government during Ireland's EU Presidency with renewed trust and confidence."

Baltic Countries

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda described the development as "A great victory for Hungary! A great victory for Europe!"

In his post, Nauseda stated, "I congratulate Peter Magyar. There is much we can and must do in the name of democracy, justice, and peace."

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated in a post on his social media account, "Hungarians have made a historic choice for a free and strong Hungary within a united Europe, rejecting forces that ignored their interests. I look forward to working together on the common ground that unites Estonia, Hungary, and Europe."

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina also stated, "I look forward to working with you on advancing common European interests and values."

France

French President Emmanuel Macron stated in a post on the X social media platform that he had spoken with Peter Magyar to congratulate him on his victory in Hungary.

Macron said, "France welcomes the victory of democratic participation, the Hungarian people's commitment to European Union (EU) values, and Hungary's commitment to Europe."

The French President expressed his desire to work with Hungary for a more sovereign Europe, the security and competitiveness of the continent, and for democracy.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot expressed his congratulations to Magyar and the Tisza Party, who won the elections in Hungary, in a statement on the same platform.

Barrot commented that "the Hungarian people have decided to turn a new page against a government that undermines the rule of law and fundamental freedoms, spreads disinformation, and cooperates with Russia while disregarding European sovereignty."

Stating that this historic vote serves as a lesson from the Hungarian people to those who try to write their history for them, Barrot said, "Europeans are free and intend to remain so. Long live Europe, long live democracy."

Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic stated in a post on his X social media account that he had congratulated Magyar, with whom he spoke by phone, on his election victory.

Stating that he hopes for the swift and successful formation of a new government in line with the strong mandate given to Magyar by Hungarian voters, Plenkovic assessed, "I welcome the further strengthening of cooperation between Croatia and Hungary at both the bilateral and European levels. Our goal is to improve political dialogue between the two countries, deepen cooperation in the economic and energy fields, and resolve outstanding issues in a spirit of good neighborliness and partnership."

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob also stated in his announcement that he congratulated Magyar on his victory.

Noting that Magyar's success is also important for the future of Europe, Golob said, "A more effective European Union can respond to the great challenges brought by the extremely difficult period ahead. I offer my sincere thanks to everyone in our neighbor and friend Hungary who chose togetherness instead of division and solidarity instead of sovereignism."

Bosnian Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic congratulated Peter Magyar, leader of the Respect and Freedom Party (Tisza), who led the election in Hungary.

In his post on the X social media platform, Konakovic congratulated Magyar on his victory, stating, "We look forward to a new era in Bosnia and Herzegovina - Hungary relations based on mutual respect, true partnership, and shared European values."

Spain

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez shared the message on his social media account, "Today, Europe and European values win. I congratulate all Hungarian citizens on a historic election. We look forward to working together for a better future for all Europeans."

Sweden

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson congratulated Magyar, who won the general election in Hungary, in a post on X.

Kristersson stated in his post, "As EU members and allies, I look forward to working closely with you. This marks the beginning of a new era in Hungarian history."

United Kingdom

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also congratulated Magyar in his post, saying, "A historic moment not just for Hungary, but for European democracy. I look forward to working with you for the prosperity and security of our countries."

Italy

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a post on her X account, "I congratulate Peter Magyar on his clear victory in the elections and wish him success in his work as the Italian government."

Meloni also referred to Orban, who was once an ally in European politics, in her message and continued as follows:

"I thank my friend Viktor Orban for our intense cooperation over the years, and I know that he will continue to serve his nation even if he is in the opposition. Italy and Hungary are countries bound by a deep bond of friendship, and I am sure that we will continue our cooperation in a constructive spirit in line with the interests of our peoples and the common challenges at the European and international levels."

Netherlands

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten stated in his congratulatory post on X, "The Hungarian people have spoken. This marks a new step for Hungary and the EU; it offers hope for the restoration of democracy, the rule of law, and European cooperation."

Norway

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store also congratulated Magyar on winning the general election in his post on X.

Store, who stated that the election result is of great importance for Europe, assessed, "I look forward to close and constructive cooperation towards ensuring peace and stability, democracy, and the rule of law on our continent."

Romania

Romanian President Nicuşor Dan emphasized in his post on X that the Hungarian people had clearly and strongly expressed their will.
