Constitutional amendment proposed to keep Trump in office: Path to a third term could be opened

 U.S. Republican Congressman Andy Ogles has submitted a bill to the House of Representatives proposing a constitutional amendment that would allow American presidents to serve three terms. According to the U.S. Constitution, a U.S. president can serve a maximum of two terms. Ogles' proposal suggests increasing this limit to three terms.

Taking action to enable U.S. President Donald Trump to be elected for a third time, the Republican lawmaker announced the bill he submitted to the House of Representatives.

Stating that the bill he prepared for Trump to serve more than two terms is important for the country's governance, Ogles noted the following:

'He is someone dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country; we, as lawmakers and states, must do everything we can to support him.'

The Republican Congressman added, 'I am proposing an amendment to revisit the term limits imposed on the presidency by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.'

The constitutional amendment limiting the term of U.S. presidents to two terms was enacted during the time of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served as U.S. President four times. Roosevelt, who remained in office throughout World War II, validated the concerns of those who feared the U.S. might turn into a dictatorship in the future and had the two-term rule, which had been applied as a 'custom' until his era, added to the Constitution.

PROPOSED THREE-TERM RULE INSTEAD OF TWO

In Ogles' bill, the phrase 'cannot be elected more than twice' in the relevant article of the Constitution was changed to 'cannot be elected more than three times.'

It is not yet known how this move by Ogles will resonate in the U.S. Congress, particularly among Republicans.

Under current U.S. law, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution does not allow presidents to be elected for more than two terms.
