Death penalty sought for Robinson, who killed Charlie Kirk

Tyler Robinson, accused of killing American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, appeared in court for the first time at the Fourth District Court in Provo, Utah. Robinson, who attended the hearing online, was seen by the court panel via a screen set up in the courtroom.

Robinson, who was wearing a green protective vest designed to prevent self-harm, answered "Tyler James Robinson" when Judge Tony Graf asked, "Can you state your name?" Judge Graf reminded Robinson of his right to remain silent, emphasizing that the defendant's constitutional rights were protected by stating, "Anything you say in court today can be used against you."

CHARGES READ IN COURT

Utah County Prosecutor Chad Grunander took the floor during the hearing and requested a protective order on behalf of Charlie Kirk's wife, Erika Kirk. Judge Graf announced that this request had been granted.

Prosecutor Grunander stated that they would seek the death penalty in the case. Judge Graf then read the charges against Robinson in the courtroom. It was noted that Robinson maintained a calm demeanor while listening to the charges.

NEXT HEARING ON SEPTEMBER 29

Attorney Greg Skordas, attending the hearing on behalf of Utah County, stated that Robinson did not yet have a lawyer but that a legal representative would be appointed for him by the next hearing. Judge Graf noted that Robinson had a low income and stated that he had the right to receive state-funded legal aid.

The court ruled that the next hearing would be held on September 29.

CAPTURED AFTER KIRK ASSASSINATION

Charlie Kirk, co-founder and president of the conservative student movement Turning Point USA, lost his life after being shot during an outdoor speech held at Utah Valley University on September 10.

The 22-year-old Robinson, who managed to flee the scene after the attack, was taken into custody the following evening at his family's home, approximately 420 kilometers away from the scene of the incident.

PROSECUTORS SEEK DEATH PENALTY

Prosecutors announced that they would seek the death penalty in the event of a conviction for Robinson, who is charged with aggravated murder. The charges against Robinson include a total of 7 different crimes, including "obstruction of justice" and "witness tampering," in addition to aggravated murder.
