As one week has passed since the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture, the toll of the disaster continues to rise.
It was announced that the death toll from the earthquake, which hit Ishikawa and surrounding prefectures, has risen to 128, while the number of injured has been determined to be 560. It was reported that search efforts for 195 people who remain unaccounted for are ongoing.
The Ishikawa prefectural government announced that at least 1,370 structures were damaged in the earthquake, and it was learned that approximately 30,000 earthquake survivors are staying in temporary shelters. While aid, search and rescue, and debris removal efforts continue today with the support of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF), the Japan Coast Guard (JCG), and police teams, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced that snowfall is expected in the earthquake zone. Authorities warned that adverse weather conditions could affect search operations.
TSUNAMI WARNING HAD BEEN ISSUED
A tsunami warning had been issued for coastal areas following the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture on January 1. While evacuation orders were issued for thousands of people, power and water outages occurred in some regions. Damage was sustained by many roads and structures.
