Venezuela continues to grapple with the devastating consequences of two major consecutive earthquakes that occurred on June 24. According to the latest official data, the number of people who lost their lives in the earthquakes has risen to 4,561. The number of injured has also climbed to 16,740. Initial assessments suggest that 25,000 new homes are needed in the aftermath of the natural disaster.
President of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodriguez, stated in his latest post on social media that the death toll has increased by 71 in the last 24 hours and that medical services are being provided to a large number of injured individuals. Rodriguez noted that 128,324 families have been reached so far as part of humanitarian aid efforts and that a total of 107 temporary tent cities have been established in the disaster-stricken regions.
The United States Geological Survey had announced that the earthquakes measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, with only 39 seconds between the two tremors. Following these exceptionally violent earthquakes, thousands of homes and infrastructure across Venezuela have been severely damaged.
According to the United Nations Development Programme's assessment on June 26, the damage caused by the earthquakes to the country's economy is estimated to be around 6.7 billion dollars. The government announced that damage assessment efforts are ongoing and that aid for disaster victims in need will be increased.
Experts warn that the number of dead and injured may rise further in regions where search and rescue operations are still underway.
