Death toll rises in Storm Ciaran

The death toll from Storm Ciaran, which has gripped Europe, has risen to at least 16. According to information provided by authorities, at least six people have lost their lives in the Tuscany region of northern Italy. Three people drowned after a sailboat capsized off the coast of Portugal. The storm has also caused fatalities in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Belgium.

Among those who lost their lives in northern Italy are an 85-year-old man whose home was flooded in the town of Montemurlo, northwest of Florence, and an 84-year-old woman from the same town. Storm Ciaran, which reached the western coasts of Europe on Wednesday night, has wind speeds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour. The storm has also caused heavy rainfall in parts of Western Europe.

The Italian government declared a state of emergency due to the storm, which reached Italy on Thursday night after affecting the western coasts of Europe. Eugenio Giani, President of the Tuscany Regional Council, stated, "What happened in Tuscany tonight has a name: climate change." Italian Civil Protection authorities noted that 200 millimeters of rain fell within three hours. This is reported to be the highest amount recorded since measurements began.

Rivers overflowed due to extreme rainfall, leading to flooding in Tuscany. Streets and roads in many areas were filled with mud and water. It is reported that those whose homes were flooded are trying to clean their houses and belongings of mud. It was stated that the fire department was called repeatedly to rescue people trapped in their vehicles in flooded tunnels or on roads blocked by fallen trees in Florence, Pisa, and Prato. Florence Mayor Dario Nardella warned that the situation in the region is 'critical.' The storm has also reached Venice in the north of the country, and according to local media reports, two people are missing.

THREE DEAD IN PORTUGAL

Three people lost their lives after a sailboat capsized due to Storm Ciaran, which also affected the coast of Portugal. Portuguese maritime authorities reported that the accident occurred yesterday off the coast of Santa Cruz, about one kilometer north of Lisbon. Stating that the sailboat was flying a Danish flag, officials did not provide information regarding the nationalities of those who lost their lives.

TWO DEAD, 47 INJURED IN FRANCE

In France, one of the first countries affected by the storm in Europe, two people lost their lives and 47 were injured. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne assessed the situation with the words, "The toll is heavy." As of this morning, electricity could not be provided to approximately 500,000 homes, particularly in the Brittany region in the west of the country.

In the city of Goslar in the German state of Lower Saxony, a 46-year-old woman lost her life on Thursday when a tree fell. In the Belgian city of Ghent, a 5-year-old Ukrainian child died after being struck by falling branches while playing in a park. Another 64-year-old woman also lost her life in Ghent. Disruptions in air and rail transport also occurred due to the storm and extreme rainfall, which have negatively impacted daily life.
