The death toll from the knife attack at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in Sydney, Australia, continues to rise.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb stated in a press conference that 7 people, including the attacker, have died, and that 8 others, including a 9-month-old baby, are still receiving treatment in the hospital.
Adding that the 9-month-old baby has undergone surgery and is still being treated, Webb reported that the baby's mother was also among those who lost their lives. Webb stated that 5 of the victims were women and that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
ATTACKER'S IDENTITY REVEALED
In her statement, Karen Webb noted that the attacker was in his 40s but did not provide details regarding his identity. Stating that the attacker was known to the police, Webb said, "We have identified the attacker and we know he is a 40-year-old man. However, we are waiting for formal identification."
Adding that there is no terror link to the attack, Webb announced that the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center, where the attack took place, will be closed tomorrow.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a press conference regarding the incident in the capital, Canberra.
Albanese described the attack as a "horrific act of violence" and offered his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Praising the first responders and healthcare workers, Australian Prime Minister Albanese said, "Today, Bondi Junction was the scene of a shocking act of violence, but it also witnessed the heroism of the Australian people. At this stage, the motive for the attack is unknown."
