Death toll rises in Venezuela earthquake disaster: Over 4,000 dead

The death toll continues to rise following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. The Venezuelan Ministry of Communication and Information announced that the number of people who lost their lives in the earthquakes has risen to at least 4,118.

NUMBER OF INJURED REMAINS UNCHANGED, THOUSANDS RESCUED

According to the latest data shared by the ministry, the number of injured remains at 16,740. In the operations carried out following the earthquakes, 6,462 people have been pulled alive from the rubble so far.

The statement reported that 856 buildings were damaged, 190 of which were completely destroyed. It was stated that 17,907 people were left homeless due to the earthquakes.

AID AND SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS CONTINUE

Authorities stated that medical support has been provided to 29,966 earthquake victims to date, and aid supplies have been delivered to 86,794 families.

It was reported that search and rescue activities are continuing with the participation of 3,454 international personnel, 30,076 local staff, and 29,843 volunteers.

OVER A THOUSAND AFTERSHOCKS RECORDED

The ministry announced that a total of 1,171 aftershocks have occurred in the region since the earthquakes on June 24.

TWO MAJOR EARTHQUAKES OCCURRED 39 SECONDS APART

Venezuela was shaken on June 24 by two earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 that occurred just 39 seconds apart. In the previous official statement made after the earthquakes, which caused heavy destruction in many regions, it was reported that the death toll was 3,889 and the number of injured was 16,740.
