Disagreement over Palestine in Trump and Macron meeting

US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly held in New York. A disagreement over Palestine erupted between Macron and Trump during the meeting.

Highlighting the strong cooperation between himself and Macron, Trump said, "Emmanuel has actually helped me with a few of the seven wars we've solved. The biggest disappointment is the Ukraine and Russia issue, but I think that will happen eventually too. Other than that, we've solved seven wars."

Question asked regarding Macron's statement that "If he wants a Nobel, he must stop the war in Gaza"

When asked for his comment on French President Macron's statement that "If US President Trump wants to receive a Nobel Prize, he must end the war in Gaza," Trump replied, "I think this will move forward. We have very important meetings, and my next meeting will actually be with leaders in the region. We will talk about Gaza and see if we can do something. We want to stop the war. We want to get the hostages back." Trump added, "It will be a meeting with leaders from many major, most important countries. It will happen shortly. I'm sure you will be there. We could get a very quick result."

When asked why he views the recognition of Palestine as rewarding Hamas, Trump replied, "I think it gives honor to Hamas, and you can't do that. Because of October 7. You cannot honor them by doing something like what you are suggesting. The only thing you can do is say, 'we want our hostages back, we want the war to end'."

Intervening after Trump's remarks, Macron stated that French citizens also lost their lives on October 7 and that they experienced this attack together. Macron said, "But after nearly two years of war, what has been the result? They killed Hamas's top leaders, that is a great success, but at the same time, there are as many Hamas fighters in front of you now as there were on the first day. So these are not serving the liquidation of Hamas. This is not the right way to move forward. That is why we need a comprehensive process. I completely share that the process should proceed with the sequence of releasing hostages, a ceasefire, the resumption of humanitarian aid, and the stabilization of Gaza territory. But we also need a political perspective, and that is why we made the decision to recognize it."

Upon this, Trump said, "I have to say I am on the side of Israel. All my life, I have been on the side of Israel. We will find a solution, and I hope it will be a good solution for everyone. But it is time to stop now. We will have a very important meeting. I think the meeting we will have in an hour will be one of the most important meetings we will have here."
