Local farmer Rene Medrana, in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, expressed the feelings of the local community by saying, "They want to go to Mars. Let them go! We just want to sit on our beach and live in peace. This place should belong to all of us."

Although Elon Musk's investments have brought economic activity to the region, some residents believe that the cultural fabric of the coastal town is being damaged. While SpaceX's goal of colonizing Mars is intriguing to many, for the residents of Boca Chica, this goal means shattered windows and destroyed nature.
