Environmentalists react: Starbucks' new CEO to commute by private jet

Brian Niccol, who was appointed as the chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the coffee chain Starbucks, which has reported a decline in revenue for two consecutive quarters, has become the target of criticism after it was revealed that he would commute from his home to the headquarters using a company jet. 

According to a report by The Guardian, Starbucks' job offer letter stated that Niccol, who lives in California, could continue to work from home but would be required to travel to the headquarters in Washington state as necessary during his tenure.

WILL USE PRIVATE JET FOR 1600 KM

The letter stated that Niccol would have the right to use the company's jet for his travels from his city of residence to the headquarters, which is approximately 1600 kilometers away. Following the revelation that Niccol would use a private jet for 1600 kilometers, Starbucks and its new CEO were criticized by environmentalists.

Social media users pointed to Starbucks' shift from plastic to paper straws to reduce its environmental impact, labeling Niccol's use of a private jet as "hypocrisy." Stating that a company concerned about climate change should not have made this decision, users commented, "Do not be fooled by Starbucks' claims of being environmentally conscious."

A Starbucks spokesperson speaking to CNBC had stated that Niccol is expected to work from Starbucks' Seattle office in Washington at least three days a week in line with the company's hybrid work policies. Laxman Narasimhan, the CEO of the coffee chain Starbucks, which has reported a decline in revenue for two consecutive quarters, stepped down from his position, and it was announced that Brian Niccol, who was serving as the CEO of Chipotle, had been appointed in his place.

Niccol will begin his new role on September 9.
